5 things to help you with the loss of someone you love

My town was struck with tragedy today. A local officer was killed. He was also an alumni from the local high school.

My wife actually graduated with him. She was taken back a little. I could see it her eyes that she had lost a classmate.

There have been a few deaths here in the last few months in our community. The kind of loss that makes you sit and reflect. The kind that will have you asking some real hard questions about life.

It was only a month or so ago that I had to help some friends with their mother's funeral. I actually had the opportunity to be the speaker at that funeral. It was not easy for me or the family.

I wanted to share 5 things that I believe can help you with the loss of someone you love:

  1. Pray. And invite others to pray with you and for you.
  2. Be okay with being confused and questioning God. Who better to ask the difficult questions that arise in situations like this.
  3. Mourn. Find others that will mourn with you. The awesome thing about the Guthrie community is that we will mourn together.
  4. Reflect on the good moments you had with the person. Talk about the fun times with your family and friends.
  5. Be patient with the process. And let a professional counselor be a part of that process.

Losing someone you love leaves you speechless, confused, hurt, angry and a bunch of other words. Your number one source for comfort will be God's Word.

God's Word says:

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. John 16:22

"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5:4

I hope you're surrounded yourself with people who love you, will just listen to you, pray with you and encourage you with  God's Word.

Praying for Guthrie.
